Your website needs to do 2 things well. It needs to tell the viewer…
First
What benefit the site offers--in two seconds or less*. (Why they viewer has arrived at the site that fills their need. Why your site is better than the others. Your value proposition. What you’re selling. Your 2-second elevator pitch. A strong headline that grabs the viewer.)
*Most people only spend a few seconds on a site before clicking on the browser’s back button if they’re not convinced they’ve found what they’re looking for.
Second
What you want them to do next. (The call to action, preferably using a presumptive sales close in which you give them either/or choices rather than a yes/no decision.)
This is easier said than done, but once a website accomplishes these 2 things well, the site will accomplish your goals more effectively.
What Needs Does Your Product/Service Fill?
Keywords / Keyphrases
If someone were searching for what you sell, what would they enter into the Google search box? (one word or phrase per line)
One Word
In one word, describe what value you provide. Or what need you fill. This is your sales pitch in one word. (Or two or three words if necessary.)
One Tweet, 140 Characters
Condense your best sales pitch into something that will fit into a 140 character Tweet.
Why you're the best.
If someone were to call you and ask why they should buy from you rather than your competition, what would you say?
Make Six Outrageous Claims About Your Products/Services.
This is far more serious than you might imagine. If you are going to rise above your competition, this is arguably the single most important piece of information.
Headline
Note:
The following bullets all refer to the same thing
Within the first two seconds of visiting your site, someone should learn...
-What you’re selling
-Why they have arrived at the right site
-Why you fill their need
-Why they should stay on your site
What is it that someone should understand within those first two seconds of visiting your site? List two or three things.
You can also think of this as creating a powerful and compelling headline for an ad you might run in the newspaper.
List two or three variations.
Call to Action
What do you want someone to do after they’ve understood the above?
